Victory Ray “Vic” Havens, born August 3, 1942, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on May 30, 2026 at the age of 83.
Vic was born to Victory F. Havens and Lucile Havens. His father was killed in action during World War II. In 1951, Lucile married Wayne Mortensen, who lovingly raised Vic as his own on the family farm near Big Rapids, Michigan.
Vic shared nearly six decades of marriage with the love of his life, Laura (Liuzzo) Havens, whom he married in January 1967. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and service. He is survived by his devoted wife: Laura; his sons: Victory W. Havens (Teresa) and Gregory Havens (Julie); six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
A lifelong learner, Vic earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Central Michigan University in 1968. He dedicated his career to serving others through Michigan Department of Social Services, ultimately retiring in 1990 as Director of Gladwin County Social Services.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Vic pursued many interests and hobbies. He had a passion for aviation and spent many years as a licensed pilot, proudly owning and flying his own airplane. He was a Master Gardener whose love of nature was reflected in the care he gave to his gardens. An avid reader and talented photographer, Vic also found great enjoyment in researching family history. He was an active member of the Genealogy Society in Gladwin County, where he shared his enthusiasm for preserving the stories of generations past.
Vic was preceded in death by his parents: Victory F. Havens, Lucile Mortensen, and Wayne Mortensen; as well as his grandparents.
He will be remembered for his dedication to family, his commitment to public service, his curiosity about the world, and the kindness and wisdom he shared with those who knew him. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family he cherished.
Vic will be laid to rest at Beaverton City Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home. www.hallkokotovichfuneralhome.
