Steve “Firebat” Johnson, age 80, of Sugar Springs, passed away on May 29, 2025. He was born in South Gate, California, to Elwyn and Rosa Johnson.
Steve spent 3 years serving in the United States Navy, then proudly served as a firefighter with the L.A. County Fire Department for 30 years, dedicating his life to protecting others. Known for his warm personality and easy smile, Steve never met a stranger—just a friend he hadn’t gotten to know yet.
He was an avid sports fan, especially of the local Storm hockey team, and frequently traveled to cheer them on. Steve also had a passion for NASCAR and was rarely seen without his NASCAR hat.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Cathy Johnson; nephew, John Butterfield; niece, Erin Soule; and godsons: Cody, Austin, and Logan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew: Michael Butterfield.
Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are in the care of Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home. www.hallkokotovichfuneralhome.com
