Doug passed away on June 21, 2025 at the age of 76 after a long battle with brain cancer. Doug was born to Marvin and Nedra (Sander) Gallier in May of 1949. Doug is a 1967 graduate of Eastwood High School in Pemberville, OH and a 1969 graduate of Vincennes University School of Aviation Mechanics where he earned an A&E Federal Aviation License. He married Nancy Vavrik in 1969. He first met Nancy in Elementary School in the 4th grade at Lemoyne. He enjoyed telling people how he first started dating Nancy on a dare from what was then his current girlfriend.
His first job after graduation was a research mechanic on jet engines at Allison Engines Indianapolis, IN. In 1970, he started to work as an assistant to the Plant engineer for Dow Chemical at their facility in Zionsville, IN. With assistance from Dow, he was able to attend Purdue full time and received his BS from School of Engineering in 1976, after which he continued with Dow.
Nancy and Doug moved several times with working for Dow, including Joliet, IL; Bayonne, NJ; Houston, TX; and Midland, MI. Doug retired from Dow in 2004.
Nancy and Doug built a retirement Hobby farm in Gladwin, MI where he raised Hereford Cattle.
Nancy and Doug were blessed with two sons and then 10 grandchildren. Son Kirk and his wife Nicole and 7 grandchildren Lena, Anna, Carissa, Sarah, Olivia, Addiah, and William (Cincinatti, OH). Son Joe and wife Mandie and 3 grandchildren Janelle, Kara, and Jackson (Midland, MI). Doug was extremely proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments.
Doug is survived by his three sisters, Barbara (John) Mulkey, Glendale AZ, Linda (Nick) Klinkenberg Waterville OH, Carol (Ronnie) Douglas Knoxville TN.
A memorial service will be conducted at Brown Corners Church in Clare, MI on Friday June 27, 2025 with Visitation at 10:00AM and service at 11:00AM. Additionally, a Graveside service will be held at the Troy Township Cemetery in Luckey, OH on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at 11:00 A.M.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Hospitals as it was one of Doug’s favorite places to give. Doug also requested to thank all his Doctors, NP, NA at the Rogel Cancer Center in University of Michigan.
